An Australian Couple Moves to Spain Forever: Our Story

Updated: Sep 26

Why, hello there! We’re Andrew and Jasmine, an Aussie husband-and-wife duo who decided to leave behind our lives in Australia and make Spain our forever home. It’s a wild adventure, and we couldn’t be more excited.

So, who are we? Andrew is a football coach with a newfound love for travel (he hadn’t left Australia until May 2023!). And I’m Jasmine, a digital designer who’s been bitten by the travel bug for a while now.

Why Did We Decide to Move?

Before diving into the details of our journey, I think it’s important to understand why we made this big decision. Here are a few things about us:

  1. COVID Lockdowns in Melbourne: We lived through some of the harshest lockdowns in the world. It changed the way we saw life and how we wanted to live it.

  2. No Kids for Us: We decided long ago that having children wasn’t in our plans. We still feel like kids ourselves!

  3. Still Child-Like and in Love: We’ve been together for 10 years and married since 2018, and we’re still playfully in love.

  4. Our Cats Are Our Family: We have two cats, and they’re as large as our family will ever get.

  5. Adventure is Our Reward: We love exploring new places, and while Australia has a lot to offer, after living here our whole lives, it’s lost its shine.

    • We’re drawn to ancient history, ruins, and the whimsical vibe of old-world charm. Australia, where everything was “basically built yesterday,” just doesn’t have that.

  6. Social Life in Australia: Australia is known for friendly people, but we’ve found that the social scene can feel a bit cliquey. Overseas, people seem more open to forming deeper connections, and that’s something we crave.

  7. Australia Has Been Good to Us: Don’t get me wrong, we’re grateful for all Australia has given us, and we know our move comes from a place of privilege. But for people in our age group (early 30s), things are getting tougher.

  8. Economic Concerns: Owning a home outright seems like a distant dream for our generation, and consumerism has taken over. Debt is everywhere.

  9. Our Two Biggest Reasons:

    • We want to travel without enduring 27-hour flights. Living in Spain puts us closer to the world.

    • My business allows me to work remotely, so why not?

Also, if you’re into spirituality, look into ley lines and astrocartography—it’s fascinating! And our lines in Spain? Let’s just say they’re perfect.

Why Spain?

Spain has been calling to us for a long time. We’re obsessed with the culture—the music, the food, the language, and even the telenovelas! And no, we’ve never actually been to Spain, which I know sounds crazy. But we’re both child-like adventurers, trusting that the universe is guiding us in the right direction. Plus, we’ve seen so many signs pointing us to Spain that we just couldn’t ignore it.

Jasmine Sotiropoulos - Moving to Spain - Graphic Designer

About Me (Jasmine)

I’m Jasmine, 33, with Iraqi heritage. I speak Arabic, but not as fluently as I’d like. I’m a creative through and through—equal parts dreamer and practical. There’s always a little war inside me, but I’ve learned to lean into my dreamer side more, and it’s paid off so far.

I can be impulsive, but those who know me well understand that I do a ton of research before making decisions. Once I decide, I’m all action—thanks, neurodivergence! I love adventure video games like Assassin’s Creed, and you’ll usually find me working on client designs with Law & Order: SVU or a true crime doco playing in the background.

Andrew Sotiropoulos - Moving to Spain - Football Coach

About Andrew (Hubby)

Andrew, also 33, has Greek blood (and as he would say, that’s the only way to proclaim your heritage when you’re Greek!). He’s a football coach with a background in sales and tech. He’s my best friend and one of those “green-flag” guys, with a little bit of edge.

Andrew’s playful, charming, and an incredible communicator. He’s also neurodivergent, which adds to his creative flair. If you want to chat about the universe, philosophy, or conspiracy theories, Andrew’s your guy. Actually, we’re both your go-to for those topics!

Us Together

When we’re not working, we’re usually playing games—whether that’s video games, board games, or trivia. We love anything that stimulates our minds. We’re also big fans of bees and mushrooms (nature’s gifts, right?).

When we travel, we avoid the typical tourist traps. Instead, we seek out wild swimming holes, ancient ruins, and off-the-beaten-path locations. One day, I’d love to explore abandoned buildings, but Andrew’s not much of a rule-breaker, so that might take some convincing!

We both love rom-coms—yes, both of us. A good Adam Sandler movie is always welcome in our home, and we’re constantly sending each other funny reels and binging them together after work to wind down.

Why We Want to Share Our Journey

We’ve made some bold and crazy decisions, and this move to Spain is one of them. We hope that by sharing our journey, the ups and downs, and the mistakes we’re bound to make, you can learn from our experience.

Thanks for following along, and we hope you enjoy the wild ride with us!

Adios for now,

Jasmine & Andrew
